The late Chief Amidu, whose real name was Amina Gayesi, was laid to rest yesterday at Nangulungutiche in Balaka. Chief Amidu passed away at the age of 56 last Saturday at Zomba General Hospital after a brave battle with cancer.

During the funeral, Elizabeth Chindebvu, Secretary General at the Ministry of Local Government, expressed the ministry’s sorrow over the loss, highlighting the impact of the death on the community.

She noted that the passing of a leader often disrupts local development and urged the family to remain calm as they work towards selecting a successor who will be widely accepted.

The Deputy Chairman of the Balaka District Council, Mr. Dickson Wasili, also extended condolences, emphasizing the loss of the last remaining female chief in the area. He said the community would deeply miss her leadership.

Chief Amidu is survived by four children.
