Senior Resident Magistrate Roderick Michongwe has yesterday on 5 November 2024 ruled that Dowa police officer Mike Thabwa will face trial for allegations of defilement involving a 5-year-old girl.

The ruling follows testimony from six witnesses presenting evidence related to the case.

Aubrey Ntondera, a medical practitioner at Dowa Hospital, shared findings from the examination, which indicated signs of physical harm on the child. “The examination revealed certain details, including traces of oil and slight bleeding in private areas. When gently questioned, the child shared information in English about what reportedly took place,” explained Ntondera, noting the child’s visible discomfort and anxiety during questioning.

Another witness, Steven Jana from Dowa Police, reported that investigations found Thabwa alone in the residence with the child during the time in question. Jana confirmed the medical findings, which prompted the subsequent arrest.

Representing himself, Thabwa inquired about the basis of the allegations, including DNA evidence. In issuing the ruling, Magistrate Michongwe remarked that there is sufficient evidence to continue to trial.

The court proceedings are set to resume today on 6th November 2024 where Thabwa will present his defense.
