Recently dismissed head coach of the Malawi national football team, the Flames, Patrick Mabedi, has engaged law firm Kanyenda, Makiyi & Associates to represent him in a dispute with the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) over unpaid salaries and benefits.

This development follows his termination last week due to what Fam described as poor performance across competitions.

Private lawyer David Kanyenda confirmed Mabedi’s intentions, stating, “We have received and accepted instructions from Mr. Patrick Mabedi to represent him in respect of matters concerning his employment relationship with Fam.” Kanyenda noted that if Fam fails to fulfill its financial obligations, they will proceed with legal action. However, he did not disclose the specific amount Mabedi is demanding from the association.

When reached for comment, Fam General Secretary Alfred Gunda expressed surprise, stating he was unaware of any legal proceedings related to Mabedi’s case.

In the meantime, Fam has appointed FCB Nyasa Big Bullets coach Kalisto Pasuwa as interim head coach to lead the Flames in their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Burundi and Burkina Faso.

This legal challenge marks another chapter in the ongoing challenges facing the Flames, as supporters await clarity on the national team’s leadership and future.
