Four police officers from Mchinji Police Station have been arrested for allegedly stealing parts from an impounded vehicle stored as evidence at the station.
The officers, identified as Constables Herbert Lipenga, Lusungu Kaunga, Peter Mangiriza, and Stainly Chikafa, reportedly stole a spare tire, wheel spanner, and two side-view mirrors from a white 2-ton vehicle, registration DZ 4062.
The vehicle, seized in July 2024 for an unrelated court case, was parked behind the police station’s office cage.
“In October, while on night duty, the four officers allegedly conspired to remove and sell the parts to a local businessman in Mchinji’s main market for MK40,000,” reads the police report.
Detective Brown Chewe, who reported the case, stated that a tip-off led to the discovery.
Investigations revealed it is the buyer, who identified the officers as the sellers.
While a wheel spanner has been recovered, the search continues for the remaining stolen parts.
