Students at Lunjika Secondary School in Mzimba District have caused damage to school property following the death of a Grade 7 student, who passed away after battling malaria. Eswazini police chief, Giliard Sichinga, confirmed that the student died at the school due to complications from the illness.
However, reports suggest that students were angered by claims of neglect, alleging that the school’s principal failed to promptly seek medical attention for the child.
The unrest appears to have been fueled by broader dissatisfaction with the school’s conditions, particularly complaints about poor-quality food. According to Sichinga, the students seized on the opportunity to vent their frustrations, resulting in the destruction of various school property, including numerous computers.
Sources from the school suggest that the students had been voicing their grievances about their diet and living conditions, with some even threatening to take action. The destruction was reportedly widespread, with students breaking computers and damaging other facilities across the school grounds.
The principal, Charles Ngoma, declined to comment on the matter when approached for a statement.
