Lilongwe District Commissioner Lawford Palani has asked opposition parties to reschedule to a later date their planned demonstrations slated for today in the capital Lilongwe over security concerns.

The four political parties namely the United Democratic Front (UDF), Alliance for Democracy (AFORD), United Transformation Movement (UTM), Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and EFM have organized demonstrations with an aim of forcing Malawi Electoral Commission Chairperson Annabel Mtalimanja and Mec Chief Elections Officer Andrew Mpesi to resign.

The opposition political parties also want Mec to use manual transmission of election results and not Smartmatic system.

But a letter addressed to the said political parties, the DC says the police will be unable to provide adequate security today because they will be engaged in other equally important assignments.

Reacting to the development DPP spokesperson Shadreck Namalomba refused to call off the demonstrations.

“No retreat, no surrender. Demonstrations are on mawa (today),” said Namalomba while calling upon Malawians to patronize the demonstrations.
