Police in Lilongwe have dispersed protesters at the Lilongwe Community Ground using tear gas.

The demonstrations, led by opposition party leaders, began today in the city despite requests from the District Commissioner to postpone the protests.

The protesters are demanding the resignation of the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chairperson, Annabel Mtalimanja.

The protesters argue that Mtalimanja should step down due to her alleged family ties with the late John Tembo, a former member of the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP).
