Police in Mulanje have confirmed that a woman found dead in Chitakale Forest on Tuesday was shot by forest guards.
The deceased, identified as 35-year-old Gladys Chimbeta from Gulumba Village in Mfumu Chikumbu area, was reportedly killed by a guard while allegedly involved in illegal activities, such as stealing trees or firewood.
Mulanje police spokesperson, Innocent Moses, stated that an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend the guard responsible for the shooting.
This incident marks the second time Chitakale Forest guards have been involved in fatal shootings of people suspected of theft, although the perpetrators have yet to be caught in both cases.
