Police at Area 36 in Lilongwe have arrested Ashani Chikumbutso, 18, for allegedly raping and robbing a 24-year-old woman of a cellphone along the Malangalanga Admarc Forest.
The incident happened at around 05:00 hours on November 2, 2024.
The suspect, alongside his accomplice only identified as Bambo a Charles who is currently at large, attacked the victim who was passing by the forest, opposite Central Poultry main gate.
The duo dragged the victim into the forest where in succession, they raped the woman before robbing her of a cellphone, and disappeared.
On the day of his arrest November 13, 2024, the suspect stole a cellphone from another person prompting a wrath from members of the community who apprehended him.
And, when the rape victim went to see what was happening after hearing the chants, _wakubayo, wakubayo,_ it is when she identified the suspect and alerted the police.
The suspect will appear in court soon to answer rape and robbery charges.
Meanwhile, a manhunt for the suspect’s accomplice is currently underway.
The suspect, who is a resident of Mwenyekondo location, Area 36, hails from Nima Village, Traditional Authority Chimutu in Lilongwe District.
