The Alliance for Democracy (AFORD) has called on its members to join the demonstrations organised by the Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiative (CDEDI). The protests are aimed at demanding the resignation of Energy Minister Ibrahim Matola and MERA CEO Henry Kachaje due to the ongoing fuel shortage crisis in the country.

In a statement signed by AFORD spokesperson Annie Amatullah Maluwa, the party criticized the government for failing to address the fuel scarcity, which has caused significant disruption nationwide.

“The current fuel crisis is evidence that the government has failed to deliver on its promises to the people of Malawi,” the statement read.

The party has also urged the government to take immediate steps to resolve the crisis and suggested that public servants be allowed to work from home as was done during the Covid-19 pandemic.

AFORD’s call for participation adds momentum to the CDEDI-led protests, reflecting growing dissatisfaction with the government’s handling of the energy and economic challenges.
