A group calling itself concerned citizen of Malawi has publicly expressed disappointment with Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioner Annabel Mtalimanja’s response to their calls for her resignation, labeling it “regrettable” and lacking accountability.
The group through its representative Edward Kambanje claims Mtalimanja is deflecting responsibility, further eroding public confidence in her leadership.
The MEC Commissioner was sworn in on June 21, 2024, along with two other commissioners, Dr. Limbikani Kamlongera and Rev. Phillip Kambulire.
However, controversy surrounding her appointment and alleged ties to the governing party has sparked concerns about the commission’s impartiality.
When advised to direct their demands to the Judicial Service Commission, the group viewed it as an attempt to divert attention from the core issues of competence and integrity within MEC.
Undeterred, they plan to engage the Judicial Service Commission formally while maintaining public pressure.
The group emphasized that the fight for transparency and fairness in Malawi’s electoral process is far from over.
With the 2025 general elections approaching, the stakes are high, and the group remains committed to ensuring accountability and integrity in the electoral process.
