President Lazarus Chakwera has reaffirmed his government’s commitment of promoting the agriculture sector in the country saying it is the only way of reducing levels of poverty among the people in the country.
Chakwera was speaking at Chiunjiza Trading Centre in Msinja South Constituency in the area Traditional Authority Masula in Lilongwe district.
The Malawi Leader said as a country that depends on agriculture on its economy, there is a need to offer good selling prices for different farm produce more especially tobacco in order to grow its economy.
“Let me assure you that the price for tobacco that you saw last growing season, will continue increasing because that is the only way of promoting our farmers economically, ” he said.
President Chakwera said this is the reason his government has embarked on mega farm initiative across the country as one way of making the country to be food secure.
On this point, President Chakwera commended institutions and churches that have also started their mega farms as one way of complementing government efforts.
He then urged the people to work hard in their field this year as the rains have already started so that the country relialise bumper yield next year.
On voters registration, the President urged all eligible voters to register in large numbers so that they choose leaders of their choice in the 2025 General Elections.
Member of Parliament for the area Francis Belekanyama said there is a need to support the farmers from Dzalanyama saying the area has the potential to feed the people Lilongwe City and the entire country.
He then thanked the government for implementing the 2024 Affordable Input Programme (AIP) in time, saying farmers will acquire inputs for their farming in good time.
