The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Road Safety Alert Foundation (Rosaf) through a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at reducing road accidents and enhancing road safety nationwide.

The collaboration will prioritize civic education, road safety campaigns, and training programs designed to increase public awareness and promote safer practices among road users.

Speaking during the signing ceremony this morning, Rosaf Executive Director Joel Jere emphasized the importance of engaging key stakeholders in addressing road safety challenges.
“It is a major concern that we are still losing many lives to road accidents. That is why we have decided to partner with MPS to sensitize as many people as possible, including stakeholders, about road safety,” Jere said.

Commissioner of Police for Human Resource Management and Development, Violet Magwaya, commended the initiative and urged road users to act responsibly. She also called on Rosaf to extend its campaigns to rural areas to ensure underserved communities benefit from the awareness efforts.

Statistics underline the urgency of the initiative. In 2023, MPS recorded 4,985 road accidents resulting in 1,001 fatalities. This year, 3,923 accidents have been recorded so far, with 757 deaths, including around 300 pedestrians.

The partnership aims to address these alarming trends by fostering a culture of safety and accountability among all road users.
