President Cyril Ramaphosa has made changes to his Cabinet, announcing that Thembi Simelane will now be the minister of human settlements.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening, Ramaphosa’s spokesperson, Vincent Magwenya, said Simelane would be replaced by Mmamoloko Kubayi as minister of justice and constitutional development.

Magwenya quoted Ramaphosa as having said: “In order to ensure the effectiveness of the Cabinet in delivering to its mandate and in accordance with Section 91[2] of the Constitution, I have decided to make the following changes to the national executive. Mmamoloko Tryphosa Kubayi, currently the minister of human settlements, is appointed the minister of justice and constitutional development.”

On Tuesday, News24 and Daily Maverick revealed Simelane’s lifestyle surged into extravagance in 2018 while she was still mayor of Polokwane when she spent 569% more than her known annual income.

This was less than two years after she had taken a R575 600 “loan” from VBS fixer Gundo Wealth Solutions, owned by Ralliom Razwinane, to pay for a coffee shop in Sandton. She recently claimed to have lacked the funds to finance the business herself.
