Malawi women’s football star Temwa Chawinga has announced she will no longer participate in the COSAFA tournament, advocating for the Scorchers to compete in larger, more prestigious competitions.

Speaking on Wednesday upon her arrival from the United States for a break, Chawinga revealed her decision to sit out this year’s COSAFA games, citing a desire for greater challenges and growth for the team. She urged the government and the Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to secure FIFA-recognized tournaments for the national side.

In response, Women’s Football Association chairperson Adella Migogo said discussions will be held with Chawinga to address her concerns.

Meanwhile, Ministry of Sports spokesperson Macmillan Mwale affirmed that the government is reviewing funding and development plans to improve sports nationwide, including women’s football.

Chawinga’s call for progress has sparked conversations about advancing Malawi’s presence on the global football stage.
