The Mwanza Magistrate’s Court has ruled that Chimwemwe Semu, a former aide to Joyce Chitsulo, the Member of Parliament for Kuzambwe Constituency, has charges to answer in a case involving defamation, offensive communication, and issuing threats.
The charges stem from allegations that Semu committed the offenses in October, during a political rally at Chiwembu Ground under Traditional Authority Nthache in Mwanza. It is alleged that Semu insulted Chitsulo and threatened her using words such as, “I will deal with you,” among other remarks.
Chitsulo reported the matter to the police, leading to Semu’s arrest. The charges against him include contravening Section 88(1)(a) of the Penal Code, which prohibits issuing threats.
In delivering his ruling, Senior Resident Magistrate Steve Mchenga stated that Semu must answer the charges and set January 14, 2024, as the date for the next hearing.
