The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has written to the Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service, demanding the immediate disclosure of the identities of the panga-wielding thugs arrested in connection with the recent attacks on peaceful protesters in Lilongwe.
“We are giving the police 48 hours to disclose the identities of the arrested suspects,” said Sylvester Namiwa, Executive Director of CDEDI.
“Malawians have the right to know who these individuals are and to follow their case to its logical conclusion.”
The demand comes after President Lazarus Chakwera directed the police to arrest the thugs responsible for the attacks.
The police have since confirmed that arrests have been made, but have not disclosed the identities of the suspects.
CDEDI is urging the police to be transparent and accountable in their handling of the case.
“By disclosing the identities of the arrested suspects, the police will demonstrate their commitment to upholding the law and protecting the rights of Malawian citizens,” said Namiwa.
