The police in Zomba have arrested Jesse Mpanira, 35 years old, on suspicion of trying to smuggle marijuana into Zomba prison.

According to the deputy spokesperson of the police in the district, Andrew Mwale, the suspect went to his brother  brother-in-law who was imprisoned for the rest of his life.

Mr Mwale said he hid the cannabis in the nsima that he took for his brother-in-law  but the prison guards found it at the gate of the prison during a search.

Mpanira, who hails from Duncan village of Senior Chief Malemia in the district, will appear in court soon to answer the charge of introducing illegal substances into the prison.
