A British young man, identified as Marcus Fakana, has been sentenced to one year in prison in Dubai after being convicted of having a relationship with a 17-year-old girl.
The incident unfolded after Marcus, 18, met the girl—also a British citizen of Indian descent while both were on holiday in Dubai. The two reportedly began a romantic relationship during their stay.
Upon returning to the UK, the girl’s mother discovered messages exchanged between her daughter and Marcus. Disturbed by the content, she contacted Dubai authorities, alleging inappropriate conduct.
Marcus was apprehended by Dubai police as he prepared to leave the country. He was charged with engaging in a relationship with a minor, which is a criminal offense in Dubai. Following a court trial, he was sentenced to one year in prison.
His parents are now appealing for clemency, emphasizing the small age difference between Marcus and the girl. They have urged Dubai authorities to reconsider the sentence, citing the cultural and legal differences in age-of-consent laws as he has being kept in custody since September.
The case has sparked debate over the challenges faced by tourists unaware of local laws and their age gap.
