The High Court sitting in Lilongwe has shifted to a later date its judgment in the murder case of Buleya Lule, who died in police custody in 2019.
In an earlier notice, the court indicated that the judgment would be delivered today, but state lawyer Dzikondianthu Malunda said, “Unfortunately, the case has been postponed. The new date will be given.”
No reasons for the shift have been disclosed.
The case implicates ten of the thirteen police officers initially arrested, with the court finding sufficient evidence to establish a case to answer against them concerning Lule’s death.
It is alleged that Buleya Lule was involved in the abduction of a boy with albinism before his demise.
In a ruling delivered in September 2022, Judge Dr. Chifundo Kachale observed that there was an apparent attempt to extract a confession or conduct an unlawful interrogation, which directly resulted in Lule’s death.
