A 19-year-old Mozambican national, Shaime Hassan, has been arrested by police in Mangochi for attempting to register to vote in Malawi’s upcoming general elections using a forged Malawian national identification card.

Hassan, who attempted to register at the Ntanga CBO registration center in Mangochi, was found to be in possession of a suspected fraudulent ID, which he may have obtained through illegal means.

According to Richard Mveriwa, a representative from the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), it was discovered that Hassan was in possession of both Malawian and Mozambican identification documents.

Mveriwa emphasized that the law will not tolerate any attempts to manipulate the electoral process. “People need to know that such fraudulent activities will not be allowed under any circumstances,” he stated.

Hassan is currently in police custody, and investigations are ongoing.
