Zomba Maximum Prison security foiled an attempt by Jessie Mpanira, a woman from Danken Village, Traditional Authority Malemia in Zomba, to smuggle cannabis concealed in a meal intended for her incarcerated husband.

The incident occurred on December 8, 2024, during a routine search at the prison’s main gate. Officer Charles Chikoti intercepted the contraband, preventing it from reaching the prison cells.

Public Relations Officer for Eastern Region Malawi Prison Services, Jonas Nyasulu, confirmed the case, stating, “The interception highlights the effectiveness of prison security measures. To prevent similar incidents, the prison services will continue to strengthen security at all entry points.”

Mpanira’s husband, Medson Madzialenga, has been serving a life sentence at Zomba Maximum Prison since 2016 for murder and transacting in human tissues.

Mpanira is currently in custody at Zomba Police Station, awaiting prosecution. The authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that prisons remain secure and free from contraband.
