A stepmother in Blantyre’s Machinjiri Area 1, identified as Linda, has been arrested for allegedly abusing her stepchild. Linda, who married Mr. Chitala, began mistreating the child shortly after the father brought the child to live with them.

Reports indicate that Linda subjected the child to severe abuse, including beating, denying them food, and forcing them to sleep in the dog kennel. These acts were reportedly done mostly in the absence of Mr. Chitala.

Neighbours, who had observed the mistreatment but were hesitant to intervene due to Linda’s intimidating demeanor, eventually reported the matter to the police.

On Wednesday 11 December 2024, police arrested Linda and took her into custody. The child was admitted to the hospital with a broken arm and leg due to the abuse. Linda has since been sent to Chichiri Prison after failing to pay the bail amount requested by the court.

This case has sparked discussions among child welfare organizations, with calls for stepparents to refuse guardianship responsibilities if they are unable to care for non-biological children. The child’s recovery remains a priority as authorities handle the legal proceedings.
