The ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) through its Deputy Secretary General, Uchizi Mkandawire has asked the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to tell Malawians if political violence is part of its policy.
The development comes after DPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Mulanje Bale, Victor Musowa told the Ndirande residents in Blantyre over the weekend to deal with MCP supporters in the area.
Speaking during the party’s press briefing on Tuesday, Mkandawire wondered why number of senior DPP members continue spreading such information in their political rallies.
“This is not the first time for senior DPP members to say such kind of words to the gathering. We therefore ask its leadership to come clear whether the statements made are part of their party’s policy,” wondered Mkandawire.
Mkandawire who is also the MP for Karonga South constituency as well as Minister of Youths and Sports said what DPP is doing is a political move aimed at destroying 2025 electoral process.
“We need to condemn this at all cost. Malawians deserve a peaceful elections,” he added.
On her part, MCP Director of Women, Jean Sendeza said the statements made by DPP officials will make women and the youths to shun political rallies.
According to her, DPP should accept that Malawi is a democratic country where each and every political party has the right to hold rallies in any region.
The party’s Secretary General, Richard Chimwendo Banda while concurring with Mkandawire and Sendeza said MCP has enough security to protect its members.
Meanwhile UTM Secretary General Felix Njawala has vehemently condemned the development describing it as retrogressive.
DPP spokesperson, Shadreck Namalomba was not picking up our calls when contacted.
