The opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has urged its members to desist from political violence ahead of the 2025 polls.

DPP Secretary General Peter Mukhito made the plea in a statement following a recent statement made by Mulanje Bale lawmaker Victor Musowa during a political rally in Ndirande Towsnhip.

Musowa is on record to have asked DPP supporters to deal with anyone shouting Kwacha slogan in Ndirande Township.

The statement has attracted backlash from all corners with some asking Musowa to withdraw the statement.

In a statement Mukhito said: “As we embark on the campaign trail in preparation for the 2025 General Elections, we stand at a pivotal moment in our nation’s history. Our fellow Malawians face numerous challenges, including man-made hunger, uncertainty about their future, and the rising cost of living under the current leadership of the Malawi Congress Party. In these trying times, it is essential that we provide hope and a positive vision for change.

“Our leader, Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, represents not just a political alternative but a beacon of hope for all Malawians yearning for progress and stability. It is our responsibility to convey this message of hope and possibility to every corner of our great nation.”

He added: “We urge all DPP members to conduct an issue-based campaign, focusing on constructive dialogue and practical solutions that address the genuine concerns of our people. Let us distinguish ourselves through respectful engagement and inspiring leadership, even when faced with provocation.

“Reject any form of violence or intimidation, and do not be swayed by the actions of overzealous panga welding MCP cadres. Instead, let us champion the values of peace and unity. By doing so, we reinforce Malawians’ trust in the Democratic Progressive Party as their best choice for a better future.”
