Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Councillor for Blantyre City Soche East Ward Leonard Chimbanga has criticized President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera for insinuating that fertilizer is not expensive in Malawi as claimed by some opposition political parties.

Writing on his official facebook page Chimbanga said Chakwera’s statement on the fertilizer prices in Malawi is an insult to farmers.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making this up today, President Chakwera graced Parliament with groundbreaking economic wisdom. He boldly declared that fertilizer is not expensive. His reasoning?

“These days, our hardworking farmers only need to sell two bags of maize at K50,000 each to buy one bag of fertilizer costing K108,000. Back in the “bad old days of DPP,” they apparently had to sell four bags of maize at K5,000 each to afford fertilizer priced at K18,000,” wrote Chimbanga.

He added: “Now, I don’t know about you, but somewhere between the maize bags and fertilizer prices, I think we’ve been introduced to a new economic theory: “SOSISO Economics” by Simplex Chithyola and Sostain Gwengwe.

“Here’s the embarrassing part: even a pastor with a simple theology diploma should be able to balance church finances better than this. How on earth was this man managing Assemblies of God finances? My dear brethren, I urge you to conduct a serious audit of those years—you’ll thank me later.”

President Chakwera appeared in Parliament under Parliamentary Standing Order 70A (1) which compels the President to respond to legislators’ questions on matters of national and international importance.
