The Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services has announced that, over the next five days starting from today on Thursday 19 December 2024, most areas in the country will experience a heatwave.
According to a statement issued by the department, temperatures in the Shire Valley are expected to reach 43 degrees Celsius, which is plus six degrees celcius above the average, while lakeshore areas will reach 36 degrees celcius, which is plus five degrees celcius above the average.
MET has urged people to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day and dressing appropriately, among other preventive measures.
“Prolonged exposure to extreme heat can pose serious health risks, especially to vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, young children, and those with pre-existing health conditions,” read part of the statement.
This development comes at a time when some districts in the country are recovering from Tropical Cyclone Chido, which has claimed 13 lives and caused significant property damage.
