A 43-year-old businessman, identified as Eleviyo Mutchaya, was found dead after drowning in the Mulunguzi River on December 17, 2024, in Balaka District.
Mutchaya, a well-known trader in local chickens, had gone to buy stock but never returned home. Concerned locals later found his bicycle abandoned near the riverbank, sparking a search that led to the discovery of his body.
Medical examinations confirmed drowning as the cause of death, with authorities suggesting his epilepsy might have played a role in the accident.
Police and local leaders have since urged the public to take extra care near water bodies, particularly those with medical conditions.
Eleviyo Mutchaya hailed from Mgona Village in Mangochi District.
