An Immigration Officer, Constable Francisco Kavina, has died, while five prison officers and their spouses sustained various degrees of injuries after the vehicle they were traveling in overturned at Chikwawa Escarpment a day ago.

“Kavina, aged 31, an Immigration Officer at Nsanje office, was driving a service vehicle with registration number MG 696AL, carrying 10 passengers on board,” explained Sergeant Dickson Matemba, Chikwawa police spokesperson. “Upon arrival at Chimbuto village, the driver failed to negotiate a corner, the vehicle swerved to the extreme offside of the road where it overturned.”

Sergeant Matemba further reported that the injured passengers were rushed to Chikwawa District Hospital for treatment. “The driver was pronounced dead while receiving medical treatment,” he added.

One of the passengers, Inspector Nowa Saulos, 54, from Therere village under Traditional Authority Malemia in Nsanje, is still receiving treatment at the hospital. “Eight others have been treated as outpatients,” Sergeant Matemba confirmed.
