Police at Jenda in Mzimba have nabbed two men identified as George Moyo and Samson Kavala for allegedly manufacturing and selling counterfeit fertilizer at Jenda trading centre in the district.
Jenda police spokesperson Macfarlen Mseteka on Friday said the two were arrested on Thursday following continued complaints from farmers that they were being sold fake fertilizer by agro dealers around the trading center.
Mseteka said investigations revealed that Moyo, an agro dealer, hired Kavala to be mixing clay soil, lime and a small amounts of fertilizer to make a fake 50 KG bag of fertilizer in a bush around Swaswa close to Embangweni.
12 bags of lime, 12 bags of fake fertilizer, a heap of clay soil, a Sieve and empty sacks branded with labels of various fertilizer manufacturing companies were found with Kavala.
At his shop at the trading center, police seized 14 bags of fake fertilizer while 18 bags of fake fertilizer were found at his house labelled in Paramount branded sacks and 50 empty sacks with the ETG logos.
