One of the country ‘s leading manufacturers of sugar’ Salima Sugar Limited ‘ has said it is planning to expand its processing capacity from 1,250 metric tonnes to 1,850 metric tonnes per day.
Speaking yesterday during Blantyre press club annual general meeting, Salima sugar sales representative Mwai Chagwira also hinted that currently, the company is able to purchase 84,000 metric tonnes of sugarcanes from out grower’s thereby enhancing economic growth of Malawians.
“Besides employing about 216 full time employees, we also recruit 4000 labourers per growing season,” she said.
Chagwira however describes 2024 season as a year of mixed bag with both success and constraints.
She said since it’s operational in 2016, it is only this year that the company has managed to register meaningful profits.
On his part, Blantyre press club president Luke chimwanza hailed the company’s gesture to fund the AGM and he has since asked for the continued support from the company.
This year’s AGM which was held under the theme ‘ media as a key stake holder in free, fair and transparent 2025 elections ‘ attracted journalists from southern region, politicians and various stakeholders.
