Traditional leaders and community authorities in Blantyre have raised concerns over the negative impact of a locally sold alcoholic drink known as Baluda, priced at just K500. The drink is reportedly wreaking havoc on the youth, particularly in areas like Lunzu and Chilomoni.
Lovemore Benito, a community welfare officer in Chilomoni, revealed that five people have died this month alone due to excessive consumption of the drink.
Pasani Gulupu noted that many young people in Lunzu are not only overindulging in Baluda but also abusing mind-altering substances, leading to severe behavioral issues.
In response, James Buleya of the Malawi Girl Guides Association is conducting educational sessions for youths in Chilomoni and Lunzu to highlight the dangers of alcohol abuse and drug use, aiming to curb the rising tide of addiction and its consequences
