Police in Mangochi have arrested a 51-year-old man identified as Kefas Peter Kanyama for possession of unlicensed firearms and conduct likely to cause a breach of peace.
Police spokesperson for the district Amina Daudi said Kanyama had been on the run for two weeks
following a chaotic incident at Koche Roadblock.
“Kanyama approached the checkpoint, driving a white Toyota Fortuner registration number NN 424. He found two Liwonde police officers and Malawi Revenue Authority officials on duty.
He then parked his vehicle and came out with a riffle which he fired into the air without being provoked,” she said.
The suspect then returned to his vehicle, fished out a pistol and fired again while alledgedy threatening to locate and shoot a Traffic Officer, who was not present at the time.
During his arrest, Kanyama was found with two guns, and failed to prove that they were registered.
He is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges levelled against him.
