Renowned Malawian poet Hudson Chamasowa, famous for his piece Ndende Yamizimu, has called out the organizers of the 2024 MASO Awards for offering what he terms inadequate rewards to winners.
In a statement posted on his Facebook page, TV Mchochombe, Chamasowa expressed disappointment over the awards ceremony held on December 28, alleging poor planning and insufficient support for winning artists.
“Many artists did not attend the event due to fuel shortages. Those who won had their awards collected on their behalf. Should they waste fuel just to pick up a wooden plaque? Even this time, it was metal, but still…” Chamasowa wrote.
He further argued that other award ceremonies provide transport, accommodation, and monetary rewards to winners, suggesting MASO Awards could have done the same.
According to Chamasowa, MASO Awards received K10 million in funding from Kanema Online and displayed sponsorship from platforms like Jackpot City. “How was this money spent? Couldn’t they at least give K10,000 for transport to the winners?” he questioned.
In conclusion, Chamasowa has said, “If you’re not careful, next year’s awards will only have representatives attending. Take note.”
Despite these concerns, many entertainment enthusiasts have praised the 2024 Maso Awards for their authenticity. Crispy Malawi won the Best Hip Hop Act category, while Jackie Kantambe of The Jaki Show, who resides in the UK, was awarded Best Female Content Creator, as this aligns with what people have been wanting to see.
Organizers of the MASO Awards have yet to respond to Chamasowa’s concerns.
