Andrew Andy Simkonda, a former Moyale Barracks captain and football star, has passed away at the age of 38. He died on Wednesday night at Chitipa District Hospital after a brief illness attributed to low blood sugar.

His brother, Gustin Simkonda, confirmed the tragic news, revealing that Andy was rushed to the hospital on the day of his death but could not be saved.

Andy was a key player for Moyale Barracks during his illustrious career. Among his memorable performances were a hat trick in a 5-0 victory against Embangweni at Mzuzu Stadium on December 31, 2024, and two crucial goals in a 2-1 win over Wanderers on January 28, 2025.

On the international stage, Simkonda made history in 2009 when he played for the Malawi Under-17 national team, scoring five goals against Namibia to secure qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

The player had been missing from the pitch for several years, and in 2021, he was photographed in shabby clothes, drinking at a local bar in his village. It was a stark contrast to his former glory, as it appeared he had lost his way as a footballer.

The football community mourns the loss of a talented and dedicated player. Andy Simkonda will be laid to rest tomorrow, Friday, at his home village of Ipenza, under Traditional Authority Kameme in Chitipa.
