The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has reported 9 road accidents during the 2025 New Year celebrations, the same number as in 2024. However, the number of deaths from the accidents has increased from 2 in 2024 to 4 this year.
The number of people injured in road accidents has also risen, from 10 last year to 15 in 2025.
MPS deployed traffic police officers on all major roads to enforce traffic rules. During the period, 510 motorists were booked for speeding, 660 for exceeding capacity, 92 for drinking and driving, and 220 unroadworthy vehicles were flagged.
MPS urges all road users to strictly follow road traffic regulations to ensure safety and prevent further accidents.
