Police in Nsanje district have launched an investigation to identify those responsible for the assault and subsequent burning of a 24-year-old man in the area.
Nsanje Police spokesperson, Agnes Zalakoma, has confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Thom Gambuleni Chilungamo, who tragically met his end on January 1 at Semba village, located in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Mbenje, where he was originally from.
According to Zalakoma, Chilungamo had a criminal record for breaking and entering offenses, having just been released from prison for similar charges. Upon his return home, his parents were reportedly concerned and attempted to monitor his movements.
“On the night of the incident, his parents warned him not to go out, but he refused,” Zalakoma stated. “Around 8:00 PM on January 2, Chilungamo was found dead after being assaulted by an angry mob.”
The police were informed of the situation, and the scene was visited by officers. The body was later taken to Sorgin Health Centre for a post-mortem, which revealed that the cause of death was severe head injuries and blood loss. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend those responsible for the crime.
