A tomato vendor at Njuli Market in Chiradzulu has become the center of online discussions after rejecting a K500,000 business boost offered by a fellow businesswoman, Triephornia Mpinganjira, yesterday on 2 January 2025.

Mpinganjira, known for her initiative to support small-scale women entrepreneurs, presented the amount as part of her efforts to empower women to grow their businesses.

However, the vendor, identified as Mai Suli, declined the generous offer, citing her reservations.
“Eeh? Iiih, iyayi, samapanga choncho. Zimaophysatu zotelezi, zimapezekatu kuti mdalitso wina sunali wako, umenewutu siwanga,” which is translated as: “Eeh? No, no, that’s not how it’s done. These kinds of things can be scary; sometimes, a blessing isn’t meant for you. This one is not mine.”said the woman after being given the money.

While some Netizens have criticized her decision as a missed opportunity, others have defended her skepticism, attributing it to cultural and personal beliefs.

The K500,000 envelope was subsequently handed to another vendor at the market, who gladly accepted it.

This incident has sparked a heated debate on social media, with many questioning the perceptions surrounding unexpected generosity and opportunities.
