Two people have lost their lives, and one sustained serious injuries in two separate train accidents in Salima District.
Salima Police spokesperson Rebecca Ndiwate confirmed that the incidents occurred between the night of January 5 and 6 in Steven and Nankuza villages, respectively.
The deceased have been identified as Austin Meleka and Kondwani Denison, while Gabriel Davie survived but suffered severe injuries, including the amputation of both legs.
According to Ndiwate, Meleka was struck by the train while sleeping on the tracks in Steven Village. Later, Denison and Davie were hit in Nankuza Village as the train travelled from Kanengo to Balaka.
The victims were rushed to Salima District Hospital, where Meleka and Denison were pronounced dead, while Davie continues to receive treatment.
