Lilongwe Police has arrested Manuel Mazoni, 24, for breaking into an Indian national’s house at Area 9, and stole various items all valued at K14 million.
Detectives have also taken into custody two other individuals (names withheld), for receiving and selling the said stolen property.
On the said date at night, Mazoni broke into Harpal Singh’s house who works with the Indian High Commission in Lilongwe, and stole among others; two iPhones, a laptop, Apple ipad, Samsung phone, Bluetooth speaker, a wallet and purse that contained four hundred, and two hundred thousand kwacha cash, respectively.
After a careful study of the crime scene, and critically analysing the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) footage, detectives identified Mazoni to be the culprit.
He is an ex-convict who was once sent to Maula Prison in 2019 for breaking into the Malawi Electoral Commission offices at Area 3 where he stole computers.
Upon his arrest in Area 36, Mazoni admitted to have committed the offences. And later revealed to have sold the items to another person.
A further probe, identified the person (second suspect), where upon a raid at his house, police recovered a bluetooth speaker and a wallet.
However, he told police that he also sold the items to another person (third suspect).
When detectives arrested the third suspect, they found out that he had already crossed the borders into Mozambique with the items where he sold them. Arrangements by police are underway to recover the items from the neighboring country.
The three suspects will appear in court soon to answer applicable charges.
