A powerful earthquake struck Tibet’s holy city of Shigatse in China on Tuesday morning, leaving at least 95 people dead and 130 injured, according to Chinese state media.
The 7.1-magnitude quake, recorded at 09:00 local time (01:00 GMT) at a depth of 10 kilometers, caused tremors felt in neighboring Nepal and parts of India. The US Geological Survey also reported several aftershocks in the region.
Shigatse, the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama and a sacred site in Tibetan Buddhism, was significantly affected. The region, located on a major geological fault line, is prone to earthquakes. Rescue and relief operations are underway.
