Mzuzu based Civil Society Organizations Network (MCISON) has trashed President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera newly appointed Cabinet Ministers describing it as an insult to the nation.
Through its press statement released on Saturday and signed by the group’s chairperson Edward Kantuseya as well as its secretary Isaac Ziba, the appointment is against austerity measures that Chakwera instituted in order to deal with economic hardships the country is passing through.
Apart from that, the group said the appointment was a political appeasement and not based on competence and professionalism.
They further accused President Chakwera for appointing over 30 member of Cabinet Ministers saying it is huge considering the economic status of the nation at present.
Mzuzu CSOs network which has 33 organizations including Youth and Society (YAS), Youth Action Campaign (YAC) as well as Church and Society among others have therefore threatened to hold demonstrations in the green City of Mzuzu especially if Chakwera fails to bow down to their demands.
Among the demands include that Chakwera should revisit the cabinet size by reducing it to a lean and efficient team, reappoint it based on competence and professionalism, improve service delivery and implement real austerity measures.
“While we know that the constitution grants the President authority to appoint Cabinet Ministers, the same constitution emphasizes human rights, accountability and freedom of expression to the citizens,” reads part of the statement.
