Senior officials from the United Transformation Movement (UTM) are at the Lilongwe court today for the hearing of a financial crime case involving their party president, Dalitso Kabambe, who is also the former Reserve Bank Governor.
Kabambe, along with Henry Mathanga, Leston Ted Mulli, Leonard Kandoje, Joseph Khupe, Felton Mulli, Mulli Brothers Limited, and Web Commercials Limited, are facing charges related to financial misconduct.
Court documents indicate that between April 2019 and June 2020, Kabambe, as Governor of the Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM), allegedly conspired with others to misuse public office. Henry Mathanga, the Executive Director of Corporate Affairs, is accused of facilitating the opening of letters of credit for the benefit of the accused parties, including Leston Ted Mulli and others, for a total value of K13 billion.
The case is drawing significant attention as it progresses through the courts.
