The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) and Malawi Police Service (MPS) say political violence being incited by politicians, CSOs and individuals has potential to plunge the country into chaos ahead of the 2025 polls.
In a joint statement, MDF Commander General Paul Valentino Phiri and Police Inspector General Merlyne Yolamu observed that many are using the political podium and social media to spread hate speech and false rumors aimed at creating public alarm.
The Army Commander and Police Inspector General have since condemned the act, which has resulted in the breach of security, civil unrest, and violations of human rights, thereby compromising national security.
“The two security institutions believe that Malawians have the right to live their lives free from fear of political violence. MDF and MPS, therefore, strongly warn all involved in the acts,” saying they are crimes punishable by law.
Meanwhile, while advising the citizenry to desist from being used in such acts, the MDF and MPS assure Malawians that they are taking all necessary measures to curb the vice to protect the citizens and their property.
