A 24 year-old woman of Kalomo district in Southern Province  of Zambia,was last night awakened by the screams of her 64 year old paralysed mother who was been raped.

The woman was sleeping with her husband aged 30 in their home while her mother the survivor was also sleeping in her one roomed house.

However, around 01:00 hours on Saturday, an intruder aged 32 identified as Gift Machunda went into the paralysed woman’s room to sexually assault her.

The survivor, who recently suffered from stroke then began to shout for help while she was being raped.

Her screams alerted her daughter and her husband and they both immediately woke up to check on their mother.

As they drew near the house they found some slippers outside the door.

They quickly opened the door and entered only to find Machunda on top of the old woman.

The suspect attempted to escape but the two managed to get hold of him and later called the reserve police officer who went and handcuffed him.

The matter was later reported to Kalomo Police Station via a phone call.

Southern Province police deputy commanding officer, Moono Namalongo said police rushed to the scene where they picked both the suspect and the survivor.

“Upon reaching the Police station, the survivor was issued with a medical report form and rushed to the hospital for medical examination and treatment while the suspect was detained in Police custody,” said Namalongo.
