Kanengo Police in Lilongwe have arrested a 37-year-old man, Alfred Chakwana, on suspicion of attempting to commit a crime.
According to Kanengo Police spokesperson Sub Inspector Gresham Ngwira, the incident occurred on January 14, 2025, around 8 PM. Chakwana had hired a motorcycle taxi rider, Harry Namaya, to take him from City Centre to Kanengo for a fee of K4,000.
Upon arrival in Kanengo, Chakwana asked Namaya to proceed to another location where he claimed he would collect money to pay the fare. However, Namaya became suspicious as the area Chakwana directed him to was known to be unsafe.
A disagreement ensued between the two, catching the attention of nearby police officers. They intervened and escorted both men to Kanengo Police Station for further inquiry.
Upon searching Chakwana, police discovered he was in possession of a knife, leading them to suspect he intended to harm or rob the rider. Police linked this to similar tactics used by criminals who pose as customers to attack motorcycle taxi operators.
Chakwana, a resident of Sakhama Village under Traditional Authority Chikumbu in Mulanje, is expected to appear in court soon to answer charges related to the incident.
