The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) has successfully reached all 5.7 million chronically food-insecure people in Malawi during the first phase of the 2024/2025 Lean Season Food Insecurity Response Programme.
Commissioner for Disaster Management Affairs, Charles Kalemba, confirmed the progress, noting that many councils have already begun the second phase, with the third phase set to roll out soon. “Things are moving as planned,” Kalemba assured.
However, Nsanje North Constituency legislator, Enock Chizuzu, has described the situation as dire, calling for additional support to assist vulnerable households in need.
One beneficiary, Mary Beka, a 45-year-old mother of four from Chapinga village under Senior Chief Mlolo in Nsanje, shared her struggles with food insecurity. She explained that the crisis has forced her children to miss school as they cannot focus on an empty stomach.
Beka expressed gratitude for the assistance, stating it has provided much-needed relief for her family.
