The Principal Residence Magistrate Court in Mzuzu has convicted and sentenced 36-year-old Joseph Phiri to 15 years’ imprisonment with hard labour for having sexual intercourse with a 15 year old girl.

The court, through State Prosecutor Sub-Inspector Samuel Juziwel, heard that the convict and the victim are neighbours residing within the city.

On November 5, 2024, he met the girl in town at Kukoma shop, where she was sent on an errand. The convict convinced her to go to Zingilirani Lodge, room 1, where they had sexual intercourse.

The victim went back home late, and when her parents asked where she was, she revealed everything.

The issue was reported to Mzuzu Police Station, and the victim was issued a medical report. Medical findings revealed that penetration occurred, and Phiri was arrested on January 10, 2025.

Appearing before court, he pleaded guilty to the charge and, in mitigation, asked the court for leniency, saying that he is a family man.

However, the State Prosecutor asked the court for a stiff punishment because such cases are becoming rampant.

Passing judgement, Principal Resident Magistrate Cremence Chamwenda concurred with the State, saying that the convict, being a neighbour, was responsible for protecting the child, but instead, he victimised her. He then sentenced him to 15 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.

Phiri hails from Njewa Village, Traditional Authority Njewa in Lilongwe District.
