Police in Lusaka on 3rd February 2025, around 15:00 hours, recovered the remains of a couple identified as Penis Tembo, aged 37, and his 35-year-old wife, Tionenji Tembo,
Police Public Relations Officer Rae Hamoonga noted in a statement seen by Face Of Malawi that the remains were retrieved from the couple’s two-roomed matrimonial house.
Hamoonga explained that the couple was last seen by neighbours on the evening of 1st February 2025 at their home, with concern rising after their absence became apparent two days later.
He said that when neighbours checked the couple’s house, they found the door locked from inside with a metal bar and received no response after knocking.
They informed the landlady, who is the mother of the deceased woman, and she granted permission to break the door open.
Hamoonga stated that upon gaining entry, the neighbours discovered both individuals dead and promptly reported the matter to the police.
The remains of the woman were found in the sitting room, lying on the cushions and covered with a blanket, with the body showing visible signs of injury, including a swollen right cheek, right eye, bloody discharge from the nostrils, and bruises on the head, left wrist, and both legs.
The body of Penis Tembo was found intact, lying face down on the bed with blood oozing from his mouth and a white substance observed coming from his nostrils.
Hamoonga said preliminary investigations strongly suggest that the woman was murdered by her husband before he took his own life.
