Buleya LuleHigh Court Judge Chifundo Kachale has scheduled February 28, 2025, as the date for sentencing six police officers convicted in connection with the murder of Buleya Lule. Lule died in police custody in 2019 after being accused of abducting a boy with albinism, a case that sparked widespread outrage.
Director of Criminal Litigation, Dzikondianthu Malunda, has confirmed that the state will submit its sentencing recommendations by February 20. The recommendations are expected to outline the level of punishment deemed appropriate for the convicted officers.
Meanwhile, defense lawyer Lughano Mwabutwa has requested leniency for the officers, arguing that they are not the most severe offenders in the case. The sentencing hearing is set to attract significant attention as it marks the conclusion of a high-profile case involving police misconduct and human rights violations.
